July in Bloom

We celebrated 4th of July in Sitka, Alaska, then headed south over Baranof Island in a float plane, flying low between snow-capped mountains and fjords. We splashed down in Port Alexander, a small fishing village 70 miles from the nearest road, home to Laughing Raven Lodge. Thanks to our guides Ryan and Henry, we caught our limits of king salmon and halibut every day, along with silver salmon, giant beastly lingcod, and bug-eyed orange rockfish. We watched humpback whales all day long. Sea lions roared at us. Anna cooked amazing meals for us while Pete filled our glasses with salmonberry wine. Molly made us feel at home, even when the float plane couldn’t come to get us and we stayed an extra day. We were not at all sad about it. Many thanks to Kelli for the tasty beach asparagus, and to Maia and Sam, for processing all the fish we brought home. We are eating well.

I came home with a thousand pictures, but I can’t do this place justice. I just want to go back.

Thanks, Uncle Freddie! My mom didn’t manage to get much of me in the shot of the lingcod I caught, but I thought that was kinda funny.

We look forward to it all year! The wildlife is spectacular and the fishing never disappoints! What I wouldn’t give for some king salmon right now. Thanks for stopping by my blog, and hope to see you all in PA some day. 🙂
